The European Union recorded a strong recovery in wind turbine production in 2024, with the value of sold wind-powered generating sets reaching €10.4 billion, according to
the latest edition of Key Figures on European Business.
The publication highlights the importance of tracking the production and trade of green energy technologies as Europe seeks to strengthen energy security and reduce strategic dependencies in an increasingly complex geopolitical environment.
After a sharp decline between 2014 and 2015, when the number of wind turbines produced and sold in the EU dropped from 22,200 units to 8,300, production levels remained relatively volatile for several years. Between 2015 and 2023, annual output fluctuated between 6,800 and 12,000 units.
In 2024, however, the sector experienced a significant upswing. The quantity of sold wind-powered generating sets rose to 15,500 units, marking the highest level recorded in nearly a decade and signaling renewed momentum in Europe’s renewable energy industry.
The findings are featured in the 2026 edition of Key Figures on European Business, which provides comprehensive data on business activity, investment, productivity, globalisation, technological development and tourism across the EU and EFTA countries.
The publication offers policymakers, businesses and researchers valuable insights into Europe’s economic performance and industrial transformation, particularly in sectors critical to the green energy transition.
The release of the data coincides with European Sustainable Energy Week, taking place from 9 to 11 June, an annual event dedicated to promoting renewable energy and energy efficiency across Europe. Photo by Dirk Goldhahn, Wikimedia commons
