Eurostat has announced the winners of its latest European Statistics Awards, recognising breakthrough achievements in the Multinational Enterprise Data Discovery and
Extraction Challenges. Both competitions are part of the organisation’s broader Web Intelligence Programme, designed to improve the way financial data on multinational enterprise (MNE) groups is sourced and analysed online.
Running in parallel, the two challenges tasked participants with developing advanced digital methods to identify and extract annual financial information directly from the web. The Data Discovery Challenge focused on finding reliable online sources of financial data for multinational groups, while the Data Extraction Challenge centred on pulling key financial figures from those identified sources with accuracy and efficiency.
Interest in the initiatives was high: 58 teams competed in the Discovery Challenge and 57 in the Extraction Challenge, with 45 groups taking part in both. In total, 71 participants representing 21 countries joined the competition.
Three prize categories were awarded across both tracks: Accuracy, Reusability and Innovativeness.
In the Accuracy Award category, team MUR took first place for the Discovery Challenge, while team toad secured the top spot in the Extraction Challenge.
The Reusability Award, which recognises solutions with strong documentation and scalability potential, went to ASE_TEAM in the Discovery Challenge and spacedace in the Extraction Challenge.
For the Innovativeness Award, team HCSO was named winner in the Discovery category, and spacedace earned the top position once again in the Extraction category for its original approach.
Eurostat congratulated all winners, highlighting the high standard of submissions and the promising future applications of their work.
The complete set of winning solutions is available on the competition website.
