As Belgium braces for the upcoming June elections, attention turns to the prominent figures vying for votes, with a keen focus on the New Flemish Alliance (N-VA)

and its influential personalities: Bart De Wever, Jan Jambon, and Zuhal Demir.

At the helm of the N-VA stands chairman Bart De Wever, whose rise to prominence began with his appearance on the quiz show 'De Slimste Mens' in 2009. Subsequently elected as mayor of Antwerp, De Wever has maintained his status as Flanders' most esteemed politician. According to a survey by De Standaard and VRT, 11.3 percent of Flemings feel represented by De Wever, eclipsing Prime Minister Alexander De Croo's 7.8 percent. Under De Wever's leadership, the N-VA has dominated Flemish politics for over a decade, championing the vision of an independent Flanders through the mechanism of confederalism, distinct from the separatist approach of Vlaams Belang.

Despite his enduring popularity, De Wever has declined ministerial positions in the Flemish government, opting instead to steer the N-VA as its strategist and maintain his role as mayor of Antwerp. His influence within the party is undeniable, having been elected for his sixth term as N-VA leader in 2020.

Another prominent figure within the N-VA ranks is Jan Jambon, who has carved his path independent of De Wever's shadow. A staunch Flemish nationalist, Jambon ascended the political ladder to serve as federal minister of the Interior in 2014. Following the 2019 elections, he assumed the role of minister-president of Flanders, albeit facing challenges amidst political turmoil and crises, notably the nitrogen policy crisis.

Playing a significant role within the N-VA is Zuhal Demir, renowned for her assertive demeanor and impactful policymaking. As Flemish minister for Environment, Justice, Tourism, and Energy, Demir has been a polarizing figure, embroiled in controversies such as the nitrogen crisis and confronting environmental challenges. Her initiatives, including the 'Blue Deal' to address water scarcity and holding corporations like 3M accountable for pollution, underscore her prominence within the party.
