As Europe marks another anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Greece is calling for a firm and unified European response, including carefully calibrated sanctions
aimed at delivering tangible results.
Speaking ahead of a meeting of European Union foreign ministers in Brussels, Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis said the bloc must leave no room for ambiguity over Russia’s actions in Ukraine. He stressed that violations of international law — particularly attacks on civilians and critical energy infrastructure — cannot be tolerated.
“We must categorically declare that attacks on civilians and energy infrastructure constitute a very clear breach of international law and are not acceptable,” Gerapetritis told journalists outside the meeting venue.
Beyond Ukraine, the Greek foreign minister also addressed rising tensions in the Middle East, emphasizing Athens’ support for diplomacy in efforts to defuse the standoff between Iran and the United States. According to Gerapetritis, every available channel should be used to prevent further escalation.
“Any further escalation would create conditions for great turmoil in the region,” he warned, underlining Greece’s preference for dialogue over confrontation at a time of mounting geopolitical uncertainty. Photo by Υπουργείο Εξωτερικών, Wikimedia commons.
