The European Parliament has named Giannis Antetokounmpo among the first-ever recipients of the newly established European Order of Merit, a distinction created to recognize
individuals who have made a lasting impact on Europe and its values.
The honor was unveiled Tuesday by European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, who described the award as a tribute to people who have helped shape Europe through leadership, cultural influence, and dedication to shared democratic ideals.
Recognizing those who shape Europe
According to Metsola, the European Order of Merit aims to celebrate figures who have contributed meaningfully to the development and unity of Europe.
“Europe has always been built by its people—those who bridge divides, break down walls, overcome dictatorships, and navigate crises to forge a better future,” Metsola said while announcing the inaugural class of honorees. “With the European Order of Merit, we recognize those who didn’t just believe in Europe, but actively helped build it.”
Antetokounmpo, one of Europe’s most prominent athletes and a global ambassador for the sport of basketball, was named a **Member of the European Order of Merit**, placing him among a small and influential group of leaders and cultural icons.
Joining an elite group of honorees
The Greek-Nigerian NBA superstar joins a prestigious list that includes former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and legendary Irish rock band U2.
The Order is designed to remain highly selective, with no more than 20 individuals honored each year. Recipients are chosen from a wide range of fields including diplomacy, academia, healthcare, humanitarian work, and culture.
A symbol of European impact
Nominations for the award came from a select group of heads of state, government officials, and leaders of European Union institutions—highlighting the significance and prestige of the recognition.
The inaugural recipients have been invited to an official award ceremony in Strasbourg, scheduled during the European Parliament’s plenary session from May 18 to May 21, 2026.
