An explosion early Saturday morning damaged a Jewish school in Amsterdam, prompting strong condemnation from officials who believe the incident targeted the city’s Jewish
community.
Mayor Femke Halsema said the blast appears to have been a deliberate act of aggression against Jewish residents. Emergency services, including police and firefighters, responded quickly to the scene in a residential area on the southern side of the city.
Fortunately, authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported, and the structural damage to the school was limited.
Police have launched an investigation and are reviewing surveillance footage that reportedly shows the individual responsible for detonating the explosive device.
“This is a cowardly act of aggression against the Jewish community,” Halsema said in a statement. She also warned that Jewish residents in Amsterdam have been increasingly confronted with antisemitism, describing the trend as unacceptable.
Security tightened across Jewish institutions
The incident comes amid rising concerns over the safety of Jewish institutions in Europe. Security measures have already been tightened following recent attacks on synagogues in Rotterdam and Liège.
Dutch political leader Rob Jetten described the Amsterdam explosion as “horrible,” noting that it has understandably caused fear and anger within the Jewish community.
“The safety of Jewish institutions has our full attention,” he wrote on social media platform X.
Global concerns over attacks on Jewish sites
The Amsterdam explosion follows another incident in the United States earlier this week. In West Bloomfield, a man allegedly drove his car into the synagogue Temple Israel while armed with a rifle. Authorities said the attacker was fatally shot.
No staff members, teachers, or the 140 children attending the synagogue’s early childhood center were injured in that attack.
Federal investigators classified the Michigan incident as targeted violence against the Jewish community.
Rising global tensions
Security experts say fears of attacks against Jewish communities worldwide have intensified amid growing geopolitical tensions following U.S.–Israeli airstrikes on Iran and Tehran’s subsequent military response.
