The European Commission has approved Austria’s fourth payment request under the EU’s Recovery and Resilience Facility, clearing the way for €325 million in funding tied to
reforms and investment projects under the bloc’s post-pandemic recovery programme, NextGenerationEU.
The Commission said Austria had successfully met the required nine milestones and eight targets linked to the payment request, which focuses on green transition measures, healthcare, education and innovation.
Among the flagship projects supported are the installation of 17,800 residential photovoltaic systems and subsidies for 2,767 zero-emission buses and 167 lorries. The programme has also financed green investments in 13,500 businesses.
Austria has further expanded its circular economy initiatives, supporting around 500,000 electronic device repairs, including 250,000 carried out through the country’s repair bonus scheme aimed at reducing electronic waste.
In healthcare and education, funding has been used to support 155 primary healthcare centres and distribute 240,000 laptops and tablets to schoolchildren. Investments have also been directed towards expanding early childhood education and care services.
The package also includes measures to strengthen research and innovation, including financing digital research infrastructure at universities, digitising cultural assets, and implementing Austria’s Research, Technology and Innovation Pact for 2027–2029, which sets funding priorities for the next three years.
The Commission has now forwarded its preliminary assessment to the Council’s Economic and Financial Committee, which has four weeks to issue its opinion before the payment can be formally approved.
Austria submitted the payment request on 24 March 2026. Its national recovery and resilience plan, financed through €3.96 billion in EU grants, includes reforms and investments aimed at accelerating climate and digital transition goals, including building decarbonisation, sustainable transport, rural broadband expansion and digital public services.
Once the latest payment is completed, Austria will have received €3.66 billion under the Recovery and Resilience Facility, equivalent to 92% of the country’s total allocation. According to the Commission, 89% of the milestones and targets in Austria’s recovery plan have now been fulfilled.
